Speak Out Against Bullying

Some 13 million students, about a third of all those attending school, are bullied every year, according to the White House.
Experts said victims are at greater risk of falling behind in their studies, abusing drugs or alcohol, or suffering mental or other health problems.
This week, President Barack Obama, who was bullied himself as a child, said the torment and intimidation must not be tolerated in the nation's schools.
Sunday on 7NEWS at 10 p.m., Call7 Investigator Theresa Marchetta takes an in-depth look at bullying in our schools.
You'll hear from children who've been caught in this damaging cycle and why it can be a challenge to overcome.
Also, learn how you can advocate for children as well as unique programs making a difference.
Key stories to watch for:
  • Sunday, 3/13. An example of bullying through the eyes of a 6th grade student who is re-victimized by the school that didn't follow its own policies in developing a safe plan.

  • Monday, 3/14. Parents and children talk about bullying.

  • Tuesday, 3/15. The program that helps kids break the bullying habit starting in kindergarten.

  • Wednesday, 3/16. What parents can do and what the state of Colorado is starting to do to learn how to identify bullying and to advocate for children.

  • Thursday, 3/17. What one school is doing to involve parents directly in the solution process.

  • There will also be a call center at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday where viewers can ask the experts about bullying and the resources available to help.
Marchetta will expose the problem, tell victims' stories, offer families solutions and hold school administrators accountable in our special report, "Speak Out Against Bullying" starting Sunday on 7NEWS.
